Moving Your Piano

Moving your piano is no small task, and should be taken very seriously. Moving an item as large as a piano can be a hazardous and costly project if not adequately prepared. It is essential to be aware of the small details and the risks associated with moving a piano.

No matter if you’re planning a short relocation, or a cross-country move, you will likely run into a few obstacles while moving your piano. There are many factors to consider when it comes to moving your piano.

Before you move your piano, you must understand the complex structure and generally oddly shaped body of your piano make it very difficult to move.

First, ask yourself what type of piano you are relocating. There are two common types of pianos that our customers move:

Upright Piano – These are smaller pianos often found in homes, clubs, and studios. There are many different types of upright pianos, so it’s essential to have a general idea of the size and weight prior to moving or contacting a moving service.

Grand Piano – These are large harp-shaped pianos that typically roll on caster wheels. These pianos can weigh up to 1200 lbs and require a unique moving plan. Often you’ll find smaller versions called baby grand pianos.

If you plan on moving your upright piano, a team of 4-5 movers should be able to help you transport this item safely. These pianos will often fit through most door openings. However, moving a grand piano may take some additional planning due to its overall weight and dimensions. Some grand pianos will require the use of a crane, and special permits to properly move. It’s essential to reach out to a moving company to help you understand what is involved with moving a grand piano.
