Meeting New Neighbors

Welcome to the Neighborhood

New Neighbors

Gone are the days where everyone is excited for neighbors and that first doorbell ring with new faces and a fresh plate of cookies. When first moving in, neighbors used to come over and introduce themselves and their families, giving you that friendly welcome from the first day in your new home. Times have changed with real-life interaction, social media perceives that everyone is bold and willing to speak their mind, but that is not the case. Social media is changing the way real-life interactions occur and how neighbors/friends interact with each other. Meeting new neighbors is harder than ever. The consistent change of times and social media are not making it easier.

Without that initial greeting, how are you supposed to get to know your new neighbors? Moving over the course of a couple of days, most neighbors are going to see something going on and will be curious. Maybe someone will stop by or say high, but most will watch from a distance. In the world today, no one wants to bother each other and keep their distance. When this is the case, putting the introduction on yourself is the most important. No one wants to seem annoying or intruding but you also don’t want to seem unfriendly. What is the best way to introduce yourself to your new neighbors?

Worry Only About the Closest NeighborsNew Neighbors

Meeting everyone on the entire street can be a handful and keeping the initial greetings to the nearest neighbors are the most important. Everyone else on the street will be met over time throughout outdoor activities or greetings later on. Include the neighbors closest to you, if living in a house, the houses on either side and across the street and possibly behind you depending on where your house is located. Introducing yourself to these neighbors is key because they can be affected by you or you can be affected by them. If there are issues they will come from those neighbors nearest you. By establishing a greeting and understanding early on, if there were to be a conflict to arise it would be able to resolve better or faster because there is an established relationship to grow from.

Opportune Time

Finding the right moment to introduce yourself can make a difference as well. When neighbors are outside and they aren’t in the middle of something that would be inconvenient to interrupt, then go an approach them with a friendly introduction. If they seem busy, and they do catch your attention throw a wave or smile at them to show you care and are open to meeting as well. Try to do everything outside casually for both neighbors to feel comfortable. If after a week or so and there still hasn’t been a good opportune time to meet your neighbors outside. When you feel comfortable go ahead and think about knocking on their door.

Greeting new NeighborsKnocking on the Door

Going up and knocking on the door may be uncomfortable but it is important to meet your neighbors and just say hello. Take the time and plan it out just a little bit. So you don’t go up and have nothing to talk about. Introduce yourself, your family, and pets if any to give a little bit about you or your family. Ask about trash day or if there is a bulk garbage day. Or ask about a good place to eat if you are unfamiliar with the area. Be open and ask questions or offer anything you able to do. This gives off that you will assist if there is an issue for any of your neighbors. Breaking the ice is all it takes for neighbors to become more than just a familiar face.

Commonly Damaged Items

Most Common Damaged Items During Moving

Protecting your items during the moving process is important. Knowing how to pack boxes to protect items, will save time and money during the moving process. No one wants damages to happen,  but it isn’t easy to protect everything during the moving process without good organization and experts. Take a look at the most commonly damaged items and ways to protect and prevent further damage while moving.Commonly

Drinking Glasses

Glasses are an easily damaged item if the packing is done incorrectly and without care. Using bubble wrap and packing paper will help to assist with smooth packing and less breakage during the move. Taking time to pack and protect will prevent damage from occurring during the move. Writing the contents of the box on the outside, to know the items are fragile and need to be handled with care.

Plates or Dishes

Plate or dish packing is very similar to packing drinking glasses, knowing the type of items and what the best packing material will be to keep these items safe during transit. Again, using packing paper and bubble wrap while packing boxes to provide extra security to those fragile items, keeps them safe and ready for transport.

Artwork

Artwork is hard to know the best way to pack and get ready for a move, if you are moving a far distance and want to make sure the items are safe to use a trusted moving company like us, we are able to provide the materials to ensure safe travels. We are able to offer custom made artwork frames and wrapping to protect items along with standard picture boxes.

Lampshades

Lampshades are awkward items that need to be moved, but what is the best way to pack these? We are able to offer lamp boxes, made especially for lamps. These provide the protection throughout transit without the lampshades obtaining any damage. You can see all the different packings supplies that are available here.

Liquid Cleaning Supplies/Liquids

Liquids are hard to move because well, they can leak. Storing in containers that are leakproof will help during transit and making sure there is little to no movement in these specific boxes. Preventing damages is key to safely secured items for the move

Wine/Liquor Bottles

Wine and Liquor bottles are going to be similar to packing fragile dishes. Taking the extra care and protection with bubble wrap and packing paper can be the difference between safely traveled wine and a liquidy mess during transit. Wrapping and packing safely in boxes without extra space will keep the items from moving inside the boxes.

Mirrors/Glass Picture Frames

Using picture boxes that are protected with wood or extra cardboard inserts for supports is the best way to transport mirrors and picture frames. These boxes are able to provide the added layers of protection to keep the items in place during transit and without spending a large additional amount to transport safely.

Stereo/Audio Equipment

Protecting the expensive stereo and audio equipment during a move can be difficult depending on the size of the equipment. If original boxes are available, use those first. Otherwise, keep additional paper and packing supplies to wrap and protect this equipment to prevent damages.

Books

Books are usually the last items anyone thinks needs protection during a move. They are easy to bend and tear pages depending on items are packed. Using the right size boxes to provide secure tight space to protect these items.

Proper packing of all items is important and these specific items are usually the most damaged during a move. Preventing with proper packing and materials is the best way to ensure that the least amount of damage possible during the moving process from start to finish. Knowing what items are damaged the most will help to prepare you better for the upcoming move.

Declutter Before Moving

7 Decluttering Tips Before Moving Your Home – The Preparation

By: Maria Victoria MacAraig – Content Strategist, Miromind

Does moving to another house make you freeze with fear? Does it seem as if your entire world is about to turn upside down? There is a way out.

When you think about the number of things you have to do to arrange the move, the process may seem overwhelming. Thankfully, you can do a few things in advance to make it much easier.

Of course, a move is never a walk in the park. However, you can simplify it tremendously by doing some decluttering work. Proper decluttering is the key to a fun move. However, it may be psychologically tough.

In this article, you’ll learn how to do it quickly and painlessly.

 1. Take Pictures

When you look at your house, you may not have a clear idea of what can be decluttered. Take pictures of each room and look at them from a new perspective. More often than not, an image allows you to understand what should be removed.

Once you know what to get rid of, take a large trash bag and walk around the house. Don’t stop until it’s full. Trust us, you have enough stuff to fill at least a couple.

 2. One Item per Day Rule

OK, this one works only if your move is far away. You have to find one item in your home to give away or sell every day and get rid of it immediately. In a year, you’ll give away 365 things. Imagine how decluttered your home will be!

In case your move is looming upon you, increase the number of items proportionally. If it’s about to happen in one month, find 12 things to give away each day. You’ll be amazed at how well this works.

Smart tip: While you are using this rule, don’t allow yourself to bring anything new into the house. Otherwise, it simply won’t work.

3. Get Rid of Books

Here is a tough one. Do you need all the books you are storing on the bookshelves? Some of us have huge libraries, which have been collecting dust for ages. According to experts at TorexMoving, the majority of their clients spends extra money on packing and transporting books they never read.

Let’s be honest. We live in the 21st century. The era of e-books is here. Do you really need the good old paper books? Or perhaps you could donate them to a library or arrange a yard sale?

4. Donate Your Stuff

Throwing things away or selling them may be tough. Meanwhile, donating is something we do much easier. When you think about your stuff serving a special purpose for someone who can’t afford it, your life gets a special meaning.

So take a good long look at things you really don’t need but feel bad about throwing out. Perhaps their true home is elsewhere.

 5. Survey Your Kitchen

When was the last time you used that juice maker? Were you really happy when your aunt gave you that food processor last Christmas? Most people have too many useless appliances in their kitchens, which take up a huge amount of space.

Moving them to a new home is counterproductive. Wouldn’t it be much better to get rid of them? Ask your friends and coworkers if they need these appliances. We bet you’ll find a juice lover, who has been dreaming about a juicer and an aspiring chef, who can’t live without a food processor.

6. Take Advantage of the One Year Rule

Take a day or two to declutter your closets. Use the one-year rule with your clothing. If you haven’t worn it for a year, you can live without it. Most likely, you don’t even remember all the clothing you have stuffed in the back of the shelves.

Don’t hesitate to throw it out, give it to your friends, sell it on eBay or give it to charity. We bet there is someone out there who needs this clothing much more than you do.

Oh, and let’s not forget about the stuff, you aren’t throwing out because you are planning to lose weight. When that dream comes true, you can pamper yourself with buying new garments rather than digging out old ones.

7. Take Care of Paperwork

The era of paper files is done and over with. Say hello to Google Docs. Now, go through your paperwork and throw out anything, which is outdated. If you still have large piles of papers, which you truly need, scan them and upload them to your Google Docs.

Yes, this may take some time, but you’ll thank yourself later. Stop carrying paper around with you and allowing it to clutter your home. Go digital.

Decluttering your home before the move doesn’t just help you save time and money. It allows you to start a brand new life without any useless stuff pulling you back. You’ll breathe easier.

Online or In-Home Estimates

Online, Phone or In-Home Estimates… Which is better?

Online Estimate

Finding the right moving company can be a challenge, but there are simple tasks to make it painless. Understanding what information is needed to identify a good estimate is the difference between a good estimate and a bad one.  Whether the estimate is completed online or in person is key to understanding the moving costs along with the time and effort it takes to move a significant amount of items. Receiving a great quality and detailed estimate without surprising costs is important and is the goal of providing a great estimate.

Online or Phone Estimates

There is a challenge when completing an online estimate, the moving company isn’t able to see all the items or know exactly how many boxes are in each room that need to be added to the truck or even packed. For online estimates the easiest way is to keep them simple, each customer service representative will many questions starting room by room, to keep everything organized of what is being moved. The customer’s job is to make a detailed list, or be specific when speaking over the phone to relay all the items that are being moved including box counts or specific hard to handle items.

Online and phone estimates are great for a quick move and the move doesn’t include a lot of items. Online estimates are also great for someone who is on-the-go and doesn’t have a lot of time. They are easy to accomplish because an online or phone estimate can fit into anyone’s schedule. Keep in mind to be detailed about items that are being moved and have a great estimate of box counts or sizes to help keep things smooth.

In Home Estimates

In-Home EstimatesThe difference, in-home estimates more accurate. If you are on a budget it will almost be spot on. In-person communication is key when moving and handling customers belongs. If there is availability to schedule an in-home estimate to achieve a full estimated budget and an accurate inventory of all the items.

In-home estimates can be time consuming. That will depend on the amount of items or boxes that are needed to be inventoried. Make sure there is enough time to allocate to spending with the moving company to take the inventory to get an accurate list.

Estimates

Either option for a moving estimate will always depend on what is best for the customer. These options provide the convenience and reassurance that the estimate is being done correctly. These options also provide that the items are being properly accounted for before the move and to provide a detailed estimate to ensure the move is on budget for the customer.

Mover of the Year

Move For Hunger Mover of the Year

Mover of the Year, round 2! We are proud and excited to have been selected as Move For Hunger 2018 Mover of the Year. This award simply could not be made possible without the generous support of our community!

About Move For Hunger

Move for Hunger is an incredible program that aims to rescue food from the trash dump, and instead re-allocate it to those in need in our communities. As part of the Move for Hunger program, our team works tirelessly with our clients and communities to rescue food! Whether it’s food that would normally end up in the trash on moving day, or proceeds from a food drive, gathering and transporting it for meaningful impact is our number one goal!

As a result of a HUGE food rescue following the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon and the Akron Race for the Cure, we were again recognized as the 2018 Mover of the Year! It goes without saying that we simply could not compete and have an impact without thoughtful, generous community support.

The 2018 Impact

In 2018, Moving Ahead Services rescued 8,597 pounds of food! This provided over 7,000 meals to individuals in need. As part of the semi-annual Stevens Worldwide Van Lines Conference in gorgeous sunny Florida, we were presented with this incredible recognition.

We plan to drive full speed ahead in 2019! Help us help those in need! Donate food on your moving day, let us know about events and organizations that often have food leftover or host a food drive at your business or workplace! We handle all of the logistics!

Move for Hunger Program

Just a Reminder this ‘Moving Season’

The Move for Hunger program goes a long way to impact our communities. For each of our offices, we are able to collect and distribute thousands of pounds of food each year! While food drives are a definite help, the real impact is from customers like YOU! Donating your food when you move is the easiest way to help us help those in need.

Move for Hunger is a non profit initiative that helps coordinate donation and volunteer services for over 1,000 relocation companies in the US and Canada. As part of the program, Move For Hunger has collected and distributed 10 million pounds of food! Since 2009, Move For Hunger has provided the equivalent of 8 million meals to those in need.

How the Move for Hunger Program Works

Move for hunger programThe best part about the Move for Hunger program is that it is EASY and makes your life EASIER! We try to make it as simple as possible!

If you are moving, we provide you a box (or boxes) to toss any non-perishable food items into to. In many cases, these items would go into the trash! This is a way to prevent throwing out good food and getting it to those in need through local food pantries and more.

The day of your move we seal up your Move For Hunger box and deliver it to a local organization. In Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Cincinnati we have developed a great network of organizations that rely on donations to help community members. These organizations also provide us the opportunity to aid in food drives, deliveries, events and more.

For your upcoming move, or if you have a friend, neighbor or loved one moving soon – PLEASE let them know about the Move for Hunger program! These donations, no matter how small or large, collectively have a profound impact on our community and across the country.
